News Outlets Are Using Realistic AI to Convey Emotions and Narrate News

Hi there,

Nice to see you all and many thanks to Scott Nover who took over this space while I was out. Isn't he great? Please DM him all your favorite TikToks out of appreciation.

To the news... Can you tell the difference between a human reading a news story and a robot reading you that news story? My colleague, Patrick Kulp, looked at the practice of how more media organizations are turning to AI to narrate their articles and offer audio versions of coverage.

McClatchy, Gannett, and Canadian national newspaper The Globe and Mail have each tried out using the technology, which takes thousands of hours of human speech patterns to create a text-to-speech tool.

Some media properties are seeing success, after pilot tests at The Sacramento Bee and Raleigh News & Observer found a 168% increase in time spent on the news site and an 89% boost in story pageviews.

What else we're covering:

Fun Fact: The 1970 Range Rover came in six colors, including: Lincoln Green, Sahara Dust and Masai Red.

Let me know what's going on; send any other tricks/tips to sara.jerde@adweek.com. Thanks for reading and see you here tomorrow!
