A walk worth remembering

JUNE 19, 2025

The markets are closed today in honor of the Juneteenth holiday.

Juneteenth is the memorial of the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (issued January 1, 1863).

On June 19th, 170 years ago, Union General Gordon Granger arrived with federal troops to announce and enforce emancipation in the last Confederate holdout.

However, it took years of campaigning for Juneteenth to become a national holiday — a milestone that was only achieved in 2021.

Sometimes, good things take time.

But individuals can make a big, big difference.

Take the story of Opal Lee, now known as “the Grandmother of Juneteenth.”

Back in 2016, when Lee was 89 years old, she began to walk from her home in Fort Worth, TX to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness for her crusade to make Juneteenth a national holiday.

That walk of some 1,360 miles took Lee from September until January to complete.

She also gathered millions of signatures on a petition to get this historic day recognized.

Opal Lee didn’t come from money. She wasn’t a super successful or influential person. She was a schoolteacher who had a big dream and cared about an issue a lot.

Never underestimate how much one person who is committed to something can accomplish.

That can be a good reminder for your trading life as well.

Sometimes trading can feel overwhelming, but remember: you just have to stick with it.

If an 89 year old woman can walk from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., you can learn the difference between credit spreads and debit spreads, I promise.

Hope you enjoy this day free of any market stress. Back at it tomorrow!

To your prosperity,
