A company that planned to build a $1.3 billion methanol plant near Lake Charles that would have employed at least 150 has requested a halt to the project. Big Lake Fuels, a subsidiary of Switzerland-based Proman AG, filed a request with the Department of Environmental Quality in February to rescind its permit. The DEQ issued operating permits in 2019 and granted two extensions to begin construction in October 2020 and April 2023, the letter said, but Big Lake Fuels was unable to start construction.
