🔑 Practice Good Password Hygiene, Clark Says |
Genetic testing company 23andMe is the latest high-profile incident where hackers were able to log into user accounts and steal data. |
At one point, at least, 23andMe claimed that hackers used combinations of email addresses and passwords already leaked on the dark web from previous breaches at other companies. |
In other words, people who reused the same email address and password combinations may have been hacked. |
Regardless of the source of the 23andMe leaks, if you reuse the same password, and hackers steal data from any of the places you use it, every single account you have with the password becomes vulnerable. |
“As human beings, the ability for us to generate a unique password at every website is so incredibly difficult,” Clark says. |
He advocates for password managers, two-factor authentication and biometrics when possible. But Clark also says that you need unique passwords. That’s especially true for bank accounts, investment accounts and retirement accounts. |
If you do nothing else, pay attention to your password security for those specific login credentials. |
“This is serious stuff. You can have your money walk on you. And that would be terrible.” |
