Backpackers in Tonquin Valley

Happy October!

We're getting pumped up for some fall hiking and backpacking over here. There's nothing quite like sleeping under the stars when the air is crisp. As the seasons change, we're turning our attention to our warmer sleeping bags, sleeping pads, down jackets, and dusting off our rain gear and waterproof footwear. If you're planning an adventure, you're probably doing the same.

We've been testing new gear to add to our Gear Guides, including the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 2 Backpacking Tent. Be sure to check out the full review if you're in the market for a new Ultralight Tarp or Tent.

We also have some brand spankin' new projects in the works that we can't wait to share with you, so be on the lookout for our next newsletter that will hit your inbox October 18th.

As always, thanks for following along and hit us up on social media!

12 Beginner Backpacking Blunders
If you’ve spent any time in the woods, you’ve probably made some epic backcountry blunders. We certainly have. In fact, the only reason we’re able to give any clever advice is because of all the laughably bad mistakes we've made over the years. We've fallen victim to all of these blunders...

10 Best Down Jackets
It’s all too easy for us fur-less, featherless humans to start to feel like popsicles when we venture out into the cold. Thankfully, down jackets exist so we can spend time in the chilly outdoors in relative comfort. Down and synthetic jackets are lightweight, packable, and highly efficient at trapping body heat.

Ultamid 2 Tent Review

So many ultralight tents save weight by cutting out living space, but that’s not Hyperlite Mountain Gear’s style. The Ultamid 2 Pyramid Tent and Full Mesh Insert come together to make an absolutely ginormous ultralight castle that comfortably shelters two people and their gear.

10 Best Headlamps
Whether you’re going on a backpacking trip, walking the dog in the evening, or car camping with friends, a hands-free light is an essential tool and is sure to become one of your favorite gadgets.
We researched and tested dozens of headlamps to put together this list of the very best.
Backpacking & Hiking Clothing 101
As hikers, we expect a lot from our clothing. It has to insulate us from the cold, breathe well, dry quickly, and protect us from the elements. We need to be able to deal with all types of changing conditions under variable temperature ranges that fluctuate with aerobic activity...
10 Best Sleeping Pads
Great sleep in the backcountry can be surprisingly tough to come by. You’d think after a long day of hiking, most backpackers would be tired enough to pass out face first in their rehydrated mashed potatoes. But that’s not always the case. A top-notch sleeping pad is critical for comfort and warmth.
GEAR PICK OF THE WEEK
The REI Magma 15 Sleeping Bag in an ultralight backpacking tent.
REI Magma 15 & 30 Sleeping Bags

The REI Co-op Magma 15 and Magma 30 (women’s: Magma 15 and 30) sleeping bags offer a combination of warmth, low weight, and cost that few other sleeping bags can match.  The Magma gets it right where it matters the most - quality materials, a solid warmth-to-weight ratio, and a well-shaped footbox and hood. If you're looking for one sleeping bag that can do it all at a very fair price, the Magma 15 is an excellent choice. If most of your backpacking trips are during summer months, the Magma 30 is perfect.

The Magma is the top pick on our 10 Best Sleeping Bags List. We also have a full review of the Magma bags here.
