Since having kids, household chores have become a hot topic in my house. It’s not the simple divide and conquer that my husband and I are used to doing that’s tripping us up (our arrangement of I cook, he washes dishes suits us fine!). It's the “mental load”: The thought process involved in making sure tasks and chores actually happen — remembering to sign the kids up for summer camp, not just doing it or delegating it. Meal planning for the week, keeping track of our social calendar… the list goes on. It’s hard to explain, harder to divide, and totally exhausting. 

Senior reporter Kelsey Borresen talked to couples counselors about how the happiest couples divide up household chores, and they offered up some tips for tackling the mental load as well. It’s worth a read if this is something you and your partner struggle with.
