Dear reader

The prospect of a resolution to the impasse Northern Ireland Protocol appears to have faded fast after EU-UK talks in London on Thursday ended without agreement.

The rhetoric from the European Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic was negative after the conclusion of three hours of talks, as he said EU patience with the UK was wearing “very, very thin” over its refusal to implement checks on goods entering Northern Ireland.

With the EU appearing to threaten a trade war over the issue, Lord Frost, the UK’s Brexit Minister, didn’t mince his words either, accusing the EU of adopting an “extremely purist” approach to the implementation of the protocol.

Unionist leaders continue to call for the protocol’s abolition, with DUP leader Edwin Poots saying it has been a “disaster both economically and politically”.
