Dear,

Do you feel that your work environment is very stressful and competitive? Ever thought about how it could be made more supportive? About a year ago, my team and I decided to find out. With the support of SciELO and several other organizations, we asked researchers globally what they think decision-makers in academia could do to create a more positive research culture and work environment. And I’m very pleased to share an exciting new report capturing the 5,000+ suggestions we received - How to foster a supportive research environment.

You may remember the release of our first comprehensive survey report on World Mental Health Day 2020. While this first report focussed on presenting detailed quantitative insights, our new report is more qualitative, with open-ended comments reflecting the personal experiences of researchers and the kind of challenges they face. Click here to download a free copy of our new survey report!

I’m sure you’ll browse through the entire report. But I’d like to share a few themes from it, indicating key changes researchers would like to see in their work environments:
  • Promote equality and prevent harassment, discrimination, and bullying
  • Ensure job security and adequate funding for research; ensure better pay for researchers
  • Improve workplace communication and collaboration, and foster a social environment
This is just a sneak-peek. So please get the full survey report for the complete analysis. I’m positive that you’ll find it very interesting and informative!

This report is just one of many milestones in our journey towards a more positive research environment. We're very grateful to you for supporting us and for being an important part of this movement for change!

Warm regards,

Andrea Hayward
