🩻 Kiplinger Illustrates How Healthcare Costs More As We Age |
Most people underestimate how much their medical expenses will be later in life. |
According to a Fidelity study in 2022, the average couple estimates healthcare in retirement will cost a total of $41,000. The average 65-year-old couple retiring in 2022 could expect to spend $315,000 on healthcare the rest of their lives, Fidelity found. |
That number is only going to get more expensive in time. And Medicare currently faces a shortfall by 2036. |
We’ll leave the strategy of using an HSA or other method to fund healthcare expenses in retirement for another email. |
But Kiplinger recently illustrated the difference in average monthly premiums by age, given a middling healthcare insurance plan from the Affordable Care Act Marketplace: |
20 years old: $377.92
25: $390.44
30: $441.39
35: $475.22
40: $497.00
45: $561.56
50: $694.56
55: $867.22
60: $1,055.44
64+: $1,166.67 |
For those keeping score at home, the average senior adult in retirement age pays more than three times the average 20-year-old in monthly insurance premiums. |
