12 On Your Side: Rising water bills, changes affecting older ACs, and what? No female crash test dummies? | |||
SAN ANTONIO – We’re rolling into the new year with higher water bills – at least if you are with SAWS. The near-10% rate hike kicked in with the new year and you’ll see it on your February bill. For the average household, we’re told you can expect to pay about $6 a month more. Shorter showers may be in order. You can read more about what the rate hike is for here. I know it’s only January, but we’re talking AC. The new year also rang in a new rule that affects you if your air conditioner (central and window unit) uses R-22 as its refrigerant. The stuff is nasty for the environment, so it’s no longer being made. There seems to be some confusion about whether that means you need to bust open the bank account and invest in a whole new HVAC system now. The short answer is no, you don’t. At least not yet. Y ou can see what an expert in the industry says about it here. Have you ever noticed those crash test dummies used to improve vehicle safety resemble only men? (I’ll refrain from any jokes!) A study found that can put female drivers at risk. And, we women represent about half of all drivers on the road. It stands to reason that not all bodies are going to be protected the same by seat belts and various safety systems. Gender bias? Maybe. But, it doesn’t sound like we’ll be seeing any girl dummies any time soon. You can see what Consumer Reports says here. Enjoy your weekend! Marilyn MarilynMore Consumer Headlines:
