| Question of the Week | | Tuesday we asked: The wide-ranging Grand Bargain bill signed by Gov. Charlie Baker earlier this summer will bring the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023, tipped workers will make $6.75 by 2023 and a new paid family and medical leave program goes into effect in 2021, but higher pay on Sundays and holidays will be phased out by 2023. | Which aspect of the Grand Bargain is your company most concerned with? | | Businesses will survive the min. wage hike - they will make productivity improvements and hire fewer employees. The negative impact will be on young entry level employees. Fewer jobs for high school kids, etc. Boston and other wealthy areas already pay $15 the impact will be in the rest of the state. Minimum wage jobs are where young people learn the basics or work, ie. showing up on time, getting along with co-workers, communication, customer service, etc. etc. A minimum wage entry level job is just that, entry level - not a live long career. We will just have more unemployed young people making it more difficult for them to start a working career. Obviously our elected officials have never run a business or even taken and economics course. If you can't pay a living wage, you're doing something wrong. Why don't we just raise the minimum wage to $50 per hour so everyone in Massachusetts can live well? | See All Comments >> | |
