Question of the Week | Tuesday we asked: Massachusetts voters said yes to legalizing marijuana on Nov. 8, but questions remain as to whether or not legal sales will happen by this coming October, as the law prescribes. Gov. Charlie Baker said he wants a timely implementation, however, the town of Ashland has already voted to delay sales until 2018 and other municipalities may follow suit. | Should sales of marijuana be delayed by communities? | | Jeezus! Why is this whole story framed around minority views? Will someone talk to actual people of the majority who said enough of this hypocracy? Should liquor licenses be delayed? What about liquor getting into the hands of studens whose brains are not fully formed -- should the Legislature raise the drinking age to 25? C'mon already! Get out of the laps of the cops and DA's and just deal with the vote already. Answering yes because it's unclear if towns / cities understand what is needed in order to manage these new retailers. What's allowed, what's not allowed, pre-existing zoning restrictions, do they apply, yes, no? There are more questions than answers with the result of vote yes. While I'm principally not in favor of delaying a ballot matter that passed, I worry that towns and cities do not have the necessary answers in hand in order to protect these new retailers, concerned citizens and the community as a whole. I wouldn't recommend a town ban pot sales, but they should have the choice. A number of communities voted to be dry towns when booze prohibition was repealed. Local gov'ts ban all kinds of silly things like bags and Styrofoam cups. Booze and pot are more serious issues and the local gov't should have a voice. | See All Comments >> | |
