Because microhospitals are subject to regulations developed with larger acute care institutions in mind, in an emergency, they can run into compliance obstacles that their traditional counterparts don’t often encounter or are better equipped to handle.

Leadership insights: Hospitals struggle to share electronic medical records

Hospitals are failing to take advantage of the interoperability benefits of electronic medical records. Only 30% of hospitals are using (or sending) electronic medical records with outside organizations where a patient receives care, according to a study published in Health Affairs.   

“What this means is there is potentially a significant amount of waste and inefficiency in hospitals,” said lead study author Jay Holmgren of Harvard Business School in Boston.

Free resource: Determining NPDB reportable actions

The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) is a national register of physicians, dentists, and other healthcare practitioners established pursuant to the HCQIA. Its stated objective is “to improve the quality of healthcare by encouraging hospitals … to identify and discipline those who engage in unprofessional behavior; and to restrict the ability of incompetent physicians … to move from state to state without disclosure or discovery of previous medical malpractice payment and adverse action history.”

An organized medical staff requires governance in order to function. This sounds straightforward enough, but what does it have to do with credentialing? Medical staff membership, staff categories, privileging, credentialing, suspensions, fair hearing rights, MEC composition and function, department chairs, oversight of peer review—all these things, and more, are part of medical staff governance. Effective governance requires a solid structure, organization, and strong processes.

2018 CRC Contests: Submission deadline extended!
