A new season of bite-size orchestral concerts at the Barbican

Half Six Fix is back! This enormously popular event series, which offers a unique way to experience the magic of the London Symphony Orchestra, returns to the Barbican this month. Each concert begins at 6.30pm and lasts just an hour, so it's great for families, as well as adults after an exciting alternative to pre-dinner drinks (in fact, you're welcome to bring one in from the bar!)

All Half Six Fix concerts begin the same way — with a warm welcome from your conductor, who'll give you a quick primer on what you're about to hear. It's all about making orchestral music accessible — if you're new to the art form, knowing what inspired the composer, or what to listen out for can really help you connect with the piece. Introduction done, it's time for the main event: a beautiful symphony performed live by the LSO's world-class musicians. Big screens will show close-ups of these performers as they play, giving closer insight into the mechanics of an orchestra than you'd typically expect.

The next Half Six Fix concert takes place on 20 September, when conductor Barbara Hannigan will introduce you to the tongue-in-cheek drama of Stravinsky's Pulcinella. That's followed by Beethoven's Symphony No 7 on 11 October, with the LSO’s new Chief Conductor Designate Sir Antonio Pappano. The final concert for 2023 will be Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 6, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda on 6 December. Our readers can get 2-for-1 tickets to all three with the code LDN23HSF, subject to availability.

Ibsen By Candlelight
A new version of the first modern tragedy comes to Sam Wanamaker Playhouse this November. Ibsen's contemporaries were scandalised by his Ghosts, with its portrayal of incest, infection, and euthanasia. 150 years later, the play's exploration of morality and hypocrisy remains searingly resonant.

Three Lions-Inspired Theatre
Dear England sold out when it debuted at the National Theatre earlier this year. Now, the smash-hit (fictionalised) story of how Gareth Southgate transformed the England national football team is headed to the West End  again starring Joseph Fiennes as Southgate.

Sort Out Some Winter Sun
Weather-wise, this summer's been a bit of a damp squib (damp being the operative word!) Top up on Vitamin D overseas instead, with a winter getaway. We're especially liking the look of Guancaste in Costa Rica at the moment, specifically the beachfront vistas of paradisiacal boutique hotel El Mangroove.
