This past week a new batch of interns and residents started on the wards of US academic hospitals. I was reminded just how much hasn't changed when I
rediscovered this 1996 'blog entry' (before the word blog was even invented!) which I wrote exactly 20 years ago during my first weeks of internship at the Mass General Hospital, which began...
"I am an intern.. I am sleep deprived..." This new generation of clinicians are beginning their careers at a time of significant change and disruption; they will have a new array of tools & technologies ranging from low costs genomics to AI and the Internet of Things with which to dramatically impact prevention, diagnosis, therapy discovery, public health and more. One of these emerging platforms, 'Digital Health' has recently been criticized as 'snake oil' by the CEO of the American Medical Association. In my view, we are in the early days of digital health and its convergence and integration into the workflow and incentives of clinical care.
In this week's
Exponential Medicine Talks, the potential and ROI of integrating wearables and digital health information into the EMR
is evident in Ochsner Health System's experience managing hypertension and heart failure using these new tools. Others including big pharma are
leveraging and 'hacking' big data in our digital age, integrating behavioral science and design thinking to improve therapy.
We've just announced our
first set of faculty (with many more to come) for
Exponential Medicine 2016, ranging from systems medicine pioneer Dr. Leroy Hood, to Catherine Mohr from Intuitive Surgical, XPRIZE founder Peter Diamandis, Mark Hyman, Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, and more.
I hope to see you this fall at
Exponential Medicine 2016.
Apply now to join us this October 8-11th.
