This talk will review 2017's year of infections - including NotPetya, WannaCry and BadRabbit, how, and why these worms - even with limited mobility - became global epidemics. Their wide spread infection empirically demonstrates that there is a Shadow Internet of linked networks that provides pathways to compromise targets globally without targeting public facing Internet systems. Attacks leveraging these hidden pathways can be extremely destructive (such as NotPetya), or provide a surreptitious entry vector into supposedly safe networks. Attendees will learn the surprising lessons demonstrated by unleashing autonomous destructive worms into the wild — the perimeter isn't just porous, it is non-existent. |
