The 2020 inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS) proposed rule included potentially massive changes to wage index methodologies and complication and comorbidity (CC)/major complication and comorbidity (MCC) designations. It also included proposals regarding payment factors, quality initiatives, and disproportionate share hospital updates.

Most IPPS provisions will go into effect October 1, so depending on which proposals are finalized, health systems will have to act fast to ensure IPPS changes are implemented accordingly and compliantly.
