Good afternoon! It's Thursday, November 10, and today's headlines include key takeaways from midterm election exit polling, the latest research on Gen Z's mental health, a California woman who has been charged with murder in the death of her adopted daughter, and the states that voted to enshrine abortion rights in the midterm elections.
Midterm election results remain uncertain, and control of both the United States House of Representatives and the Senate remains in the balance more than a day after the polls closed. Republicans were widely expected to gain control of the lower chamber, but so far have only secured 207 seats, with 45 seats yet to be called. Meanwhile, Democrats have won 183 seats. Although Republicans are currently closer to securing the 218 seats needed to control the lower chamber, close Senate races in four states—Alaska, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada—remain too close to call. With Republicans and Democrats each holding 48 seats in the Senate, Georgia's Dec. 6 runoff could determine which party controls the upper chamber.
While the exact results of the midterm elections remain unclear, exit polling has painted a picture of the political preferences of demographic subgroups in the U.S., the issues most important to the electorate that showed up at the polls on Tuesday and what factors influenced their vote. Here are five takeaways from exit polling of the 2022 election based on exit polling compiled by the National Election Pool and Edison Research. Continue reading.

New research from Harmony Healthcare IT shows that nearly 70% of Generation Z—those born between 1997 and 2012—say their mental health was negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with 42% of adult members of the cohort reporting that they have been diagnosed with a mental health condition. The study, which surveyed more than a thousand Gen Zers, found that 57% of Gen Z adults struggling with their mental health are taking medication to alleviate their condition, paying an average of $44 monthly. The most frequently cited conditions were anxiety and depression which were reported by 90% and 78% of respondents, respectively. The survey also revealed that this cohort is concerned about the future, with 90% saying they do not feel like their generation has been set up for success, while three-quarters indicated that they feel they have a disadvantage compared to other generations. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department announced that Leticia McCormack, a former elder and ministry worker, has been arrested and charged with murder and several other crimes related to the death of her 11-year-old adopted daughter, Arabella, just months after her husband died by suicide. McCormack, whose parents were also arrested, formerly served as an elder at Rock Church in San Diego. The arrests came following a monthslong investigation by police, who initially responded to a call about a child in distress in late August. Detectives who responded to the call suspected possible child abuse, and Arabella was rushed to a local hospital where she died. After being contacted by police about Arabella's death, McCormack's husband, Brian McCormack, fatally shot himself in his truck near the home. Read more.

Dare 2 Share Ministries International founder Greg Stier tells the story of two fathers. The first is angry and hard to please—his children are constantly on edge and obey him out of fear. The second is loving and forgiving, coaching and encouraging his children. While both set high standards for their children, the former's attitude and unreachable standards result in these children growing up with self-doubts. Stier uses this illustration to remind readers that the Gospel depicts a God who saves based on faith alone and not one who threatens to discard people when they make mistakes. While this is not a "free pass" to sin, it is "a reason to offer ourselves to God as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1) for the rest of our lives." Read more.
Dr. Michael Brown discusses why the real "red wave" that matters is the one that reflects "a nation washed in the blood of Jesus." In this editorial, Brown reminds believers that they have been called to many things, including discipleship, to be set apart, to let our lights shine, and to love God and our neighbors. Read more.

Georgia's Senate race between Democrat incumbent Rev. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker is headed to a Dec. 6 runoff election. The vote, which could decide what party controls the upper chamber, comes as neither candidate garnered 50% of the vote, which is the required threshold in Georgia to win the election outright. Walker responded to the news on Tuesday evening, saying, "If you can hang in, hang in there a little bit longer, just hang in there a little bit longer, because something good, it takes a while for it get better. And it's going to get better." Warnock also responded to the news on Wednesday, tweeting, "[W]e are going to have received more votes than my opponent." Read more.

O.S. Hawkins' latest book, The Promise Code, dives deep into the pages of Scripture to explore 40 promises that change the way believers engage with the Bible. Hawkins recently told The Christian Post he wrote the book to help people begin the "great adventure" of living by the promises of God, particularly in light of the midterm elections. The author explained the differences between the Bible's guiding principles and its promises, saying, "It’s one thing to read the Bible and struggle with its precepts, but it’s quite another thing to believe the Bible and stand up on its promises. That’s what God calls us to do." Read more.
