Hey there, reader. We’ve got a special newsletter for you today between regularly scheduled programming: our series The InsideHook Guide to YouTube is complete! In the last few weeks we’ve: Published 22 stories marking the 20th anniversary of YouTube Dissected dozens of channels (59 just counting our hobbyist guides) Interviewed YouTubers with a total of 6.2M subscribers and 1B views Not too shabby. Now that the series is finished, it’s the perfect time for you to dig into all the deep dives, roundups and profiles — reported by all of your favorite writers here at InsideHook. When we put this series together, we of course wanted to zoom out and see how the site ballooned from a dating service to a global juggernaut, but more importantly we wanted to zoom in on how it’s become a unique resource for many of the topics that we cover on a daily basis: travel, wellness, cars, whiskey, style, books, cocktails and cooking. For all of those categories, our experts assembled guides to the channels you need to know, and profiled the one essential YouTuber that's making waves. But because YouTube has its tentacles in everything from culture to sports to politics, our reporters dug into a few additional questions that they’ve always wondered about, like why late-night TV pales in comparison to YouTube shows and why people are obsessed with a nebulous genre we've dubbed "ambience videos." Find most of our stories below, or peruse them all at your leisure here. After reading, shoot me an email with any questions, comments or requests. Maybe we forgot to include your favorite YouTuber. Maybe there's a story you particularly loved. Or maybe there’s another aspect of the site you wish we’d look into. YouTube's anniversary isn't technically until February, so we've got time to dive even deeper... —Alex Lauer, features editor |
