2013: Oscar Pistorius kills his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp
On 14 February 2013, South African model Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius.
Pistorius – the first double-amputee to compete in the Olympics in 2012 – claimed Steenkamp was mistaken for a burglar when he shot her through the bathroom door of his home in Pretoria.
This year will be Pistorius' second release on parole after he was convicted of culpable homicide in October 2014.
He served over a year behind bars before his sentence was converted to correctional supervision outside prison. However, the State then lodged an appeal with the appeals court in Bloemfontein and in December 2015, Oscar's culpable homicide conviction was overturned, and he was convicted of murder.
In July 2016, he was sentenced to six years in prison.
