An intro from Martin: "My heart sank last Wed, as the latest 10.5% CPI inflation was announced, as it's that December figure which many broadband and mobile firms base their April increases on. Yet they don't stop there - most lump a further 3 or 4 percentage points on top.

"Of course, just because it's in the contract, they don't need to invoke these rises, but since then we've had confirmation after confirmation that they're doing just that. Hitting many already struggling people hard.

"I wish the regulator Ofcom would crack down on this, though I don't hold out much hope. Above-inflation mid-contract rises are unfair and they push future inflation higher...

The best deals come from short-lived promos you can't get direct from firms, involving cashback or vouchers. The best thing to do is use our broadband comparison to find top deals where you live as what's available is postcode dependent, but the pick of 'em right now are...

While more expensive than the deals above, we've not seen a Sky broadband deal this cheap at this speed, and we know many like a big name. Via this Sky 59Mb link, it's £25/month, but you can CLAIM (don't forget) a £110 prepaid Mastercard (almost as good as cash). Factor that in over the 18-month contract and it's equivalent to £18.89/month.
On universal credit or similar? Check out 'social tariffs'. These are longer-term cheaper tariffs only for those on certain benefits - see our full discounted social broadband tariffs list. As Christine emailed: "I just learned about BT social rates and as I receive pension credit, I applied online and reduced my broadband from £54 a month to £15. Thank you so much - a brilliant saving."

5 quick broadband switching need-to-knows:

1. If you want to stay where you are, haggle. Jump to haggling tips.
2. Slow broadband? Test your speed. Do a broadband speed check, both Wi-Fi and wired (to see if it's your signal or your router that's the issue), and try our eight speed-boosters.
3. At least 50% of customers must get the advertised speeds at peak times. All providers above also tell you the estimated max speed you're likely to get before you sign up.
4. Switching usually only means about two hours' downtime. You're told the switch time in advance and most won't need an engineer to visit. With switches to or from Virgin it's more likely.
5. Members of cashback sites can sometimes undercut deals. More in Top cashback sites.

Many are already paying far too much on their mobile bills, and that's before April's price rises. Here's our quick checklist to ensure you're not being ripped off...

Step 1: Check if you're out of contract - millions are overpaying. When your contract ends, you'll usually pay the same for your airtime, or be moved to a Sim-only plan - which is unlikely to be the market's cheapest. Some could even still be paying the same handset and airtime rates, despite having paid off the phone. If you're out of contract, the power's in your hands, so read the steps below. If you're still in contract, take action when it's finished.

Step 2: Are you willing to switch network to get a much cheaper deal? If you're happy with your phone, check if you could save by switching Sim - the little chip in your phone that gives it its identity. And don't pay for more data than you need. Ofcom says the average mobile data use is 5.6GB a month - try our Data Calculator if you're not sure how much you use.

Here are examples of what's out there for new customers right now - all have unlimited mins & texts:

Lebara (uses Vodafone's signal)	5GB/month for '£3.38/month'. You pay 85p/month for six months, £5.90/month thereafter (no price rises). But it's a rolling one-month contract, so you can cancel at any time.
iD Mobile (owned by Currys, uses Three's signal)	15GB for '£3.84/month'. You pay £8/month (likely to rise in April, but not confirmed), but you can CLAIM a £50 Amazon, Currys or Uber Eats voucher. Factor that in and it's equivalent to £3.84/month over the 12-month contract.
TalkMobile (part of Vodafone and on its signal)	100GB/month for '£9.87/month'. You pay £11.95/month (with no price rises), but can CLAIM a £25 Amazon voucher. Factor that in and it's equivalent to £9.87/month over the 12-month contract.
Three	Unlimited data for '£15.54/month'. You pay £17/month, then £19.45/month from April due to price rises, but get an AUTOMATIC £42 cashback. Factor that in and it's equivalent to £15.54/month over the 12-month contract.

If you're out of contract, your network must let you unlock your phone for free. And it's easy to keep your phone number. Just text PAC to 65075 on your existing phone, and then give the code you're sent to the new provider, and it can move your number to the new Sim.

Step 3: Worried about moving as you want to stay on the same network? How to switch and keep your signal. Smaller networks 'piggyback' on the signals of the big four: Vodafone, Three, O2 and EE. So you can move to a cheaper provider and keep the same signal. Though do note not all smaller firms offer 5G, Wi-Fi-calling or 4G-calling, so do check what's included. Step 4: Need a new phone? How to bag the cheapest deal. Sticking with your current handset and switching Sim is cheaper and greener. But if you need a new phone, make sure you do it the cheapest way (never just go direct to a network).

The 'buy a phone & Sim separately rule' is not clear-cut anymore, so our cheapest handset tool includes this option and also buying via a contract, across most phone models (you can opt to see refurbs too). And if you're not set on one model, find me a phone lets you say what you want, then finds the cheapest handsets that fit the bill. If you're out of contract or nearing the end, you're in a powerful position to haggle, so use these price rises as a clarion call to take action. The key here is to make your existing provider prove it wants to keep you. It's a bit of fiscal flirting, if you like.

The likelihood is, for broadband and mobiles, that you'll struggle to match the cheapest switching deals from the tables above, but you should be able to bring your price down a chunk. In fact, in our December poll, the vast majority of those who'd tried haggling with the big telecom firms were successful...

- Over 80% success: Virgin Media, Sky
- Over 70% success: TalkTalk, Three, Sky Mobile, O2, Virgin Mobile
- Over 60% success: Plusnet mobile & broadband, EE

It can really pay off, as Dorothy emailed: "Thank you so much for your advice on haggling. I called Virgin Media as our bill had gone up to £119.50/month. I was offered £82/month at first, but called back and now we are paying £69/month [saving £606 a year]. I'm delighted as this does help with our budget as we are retired."

Here's how you can do it too...

Step 1: Benchmark the cheapest price elsewhere. If you want to haggle, tooling yourself up on the best the competition is offering, both so you know what to ask for, and because it can be used in discussions, is the right place to start.

Step 2: Call up - and be polite and charming, especially at the moment, when call centres are busy. Remember to use chutzpah, cheek and a smile. You're asking for a discount, and your provider's as much within its rights not to give one as you are to leave. Aggression or anger won't help anyone.

Step 3: Use the phrases that pay. You may find that it only offers a small discount at first, but if you try phrases such as "I've worked out my budget and my max is £X/month, can you do that?", or "Sky / Plusnet / TalkTalk and others can do it for less, can you beat that?", it may go further. If not, just say you'd like to think about it.

Step 4: If nothing's worked so far, ask to be put through to disconnections (known internally as retentions). This department's the Holy Grail of haggling - where operators have serious discount-giving power.

Step 5: Don't panic if it calls your bluff and says it'll disconnect you. Some people worry and get nervous to try this in case they're disconnected. Martin's easy 'get out of jail free' card on this is the phrase: "Hold on, I'll call you back on that. I'd like to check with my wife / husband / dog / goldfish first."

Step 6: If it really won't play ball, vote with your feet. If you don't get what you want then you should seriously consider leaving. Sometimes providers can give in at this stage and offer a stonking discount.

New. Free £200 bank switch is back (& cashback too)

Banks will pay for your custom, so unless yours is glorious, why not take the cash?

Unless you love your current current-account, why not earn by switching? This is the first £200 legal bank bribe since mid-December, good news as we've seen far fewer switchers' offers this New Year than normal (though we hear more may come in February). Most find switching easy - to get the cash, you must do it through the bank's seven-working-day switching service, which closes your old account, auto-moves your balance, standing orders & direct debits, and forwards all payments for you. You'll need pass a not-too-harsh credit check. Full info in Best bank accounts, but briefly...

New. Santander £200 FREE cash, 1% bills cashback & 4% savings. Santander pays new switchers the switching cash on a few of its accounts. To get it, within 60 days of switching you need to have 2+ direct debits, pay in a total of £1,000 once (so pay your income in) and log in to online/app banking. The main pick for most is Santander Edge*. It pays up to £20 a month in cashback for a £3/month fee, provided you pay in £500+/month. You get:

- 1% cashback on most household bills (water, council tax, energy, broadband, phones, paid-for TV), up to £10 a month
- 1% cashback on supermarket, fuel and train and bus travel spending, up to £10 a month

For someone with average bills, we'd expect a gain of around £80 to £100 a year after the monthly fee. You also get access to a linked 4% AER easy-access savings account, in which you can put up to £4,000.

Alternatively, there's also £200 if you switch to the Santander 123 account, which has different cashback levels - it can be good for those with a Santander mortgage or very high energy bills (the link explains why) - and on the FEE-FREE no cashback Santander Everyday* account.
First Direct £175 FREE cash, top service, 0% overdraft, 7% regular savings. Newbies switching to First Direct's 1st Account*, which is rated 88% great on service, get £175 in cash. You also get access to a 7% linked regular saver you can put up to £300 a month in, plus many get an ongoing £250 0% overdraft. To get the £175, you must pay in a total of £1,000 within the first three months and you're not eligible if you've ever had any First Direct account, or opened an HSBC current account since January 2019.
Couple these accounts with 1% cashback on almost all spending. The app-only, no-need-to-switch or pass a hard credit-check Chase current account* gives a year's 1% cashback on almost all normal daily debit card spending (it generally excludes bills, investments and major purchases such as cars) once activated. So you could use one of the accounts above as your main account, then use Chase for card spending. You also get the top debit card for spending abroad and 2.7% AER interest on up to £500,000 in a linked easy-access savings account.

PS: Done right, you can make £100s or £1,000s by repeatedly switching banks, just like Nicola, who emailed us to say: "Following your advice, I have made £1,360 since September - just three months! Easiest money I've ever made. I've got my friends and family on the bandwagon too, so a big thank you from all of us."

New. First open-market full easy-access savings paying over 3% since 2012. From next Wed (1 Feb) new app-only bank Kroo* will pay 3.03% AER interest (currently 2%) on up to £85,000 in its current account (it has the full UK £85,000 savings safety protection). You needn't switch bank to get it, and there's no hard credit check, so you could open one now to get money in there in time for the higher rate. Top for easy access today are Shawbrook Bank's 2.92% AER (min £1,000), though withdrawals must be £500+ each time, and Cynergy Bank at 2.9% AER (min £1). Or, for known names, there's Sainsbury's Bank paying 2.87% AER (min £1,000) and Nationwide* at 2.5% AER (min £1), though both limit you to 3 penalty-free withdrawals a year. Lifetime ISAs are no longer fit for purpose for some first-time buyers, who risk losing their money. We're calling on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to change the rules.

Grab one of 10,000 FREE £50 investments. This is frankly a ridiculous deal. If you put £50 (or more) into robo-investment firm Wealthify (it chooses the investments for you to make it easier), then after a year it will give you £50 cashback. So put fifty quid in, get the investment, and then you get your money back, so whatever the investment is worth in a year is a win. Even if your investments flop, at worst you break-even. Energy bills update - prices now expected to fall even further in July. Things may reverse, but currently it looks like bills, while still hideous, will be less than expected from July. Our energy bills update includes Martin's video.

Shift credit card debt for a big best-buy 33 months at 0% (2.9% fee) or 22 months for NO-FEE. A balance transfer's where you get a new card that pays off old cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0%. NatWest's 33 months 0% (2.9% fee)* is by far the longest 0% deal (22.9% rep APR after the 0% ends), as is - of its type - NatWest's 22 months 0% NO FEE* card (better if you can repay quicker, 21.9% rep APR after). Originally only existing banking customers could apply, but now anyone can. The state put money away for millions of kids but many weren't aware or have lost track

This is for anyone in the UK BORN 1 SEPT 2002 TO 2 JAN 2011 as that means a Child Trust Fund (CTF) would have been opened in your name when you were born, which the state automatically started with up to £250 (£500 for those from low-income families). This tax-free savings product, which up to £9,000 a year can be added to, can't be touched until you hit 18 (which is now quite a decent number of people).

Lost track of your Child Trust Fund? Don't worry it's still your money. Of 6.3m active CTFs it's thought 100,000s are 'lost' meaning you mightn't know you have one, or don't know where it is. The average CTF is now worth £2,100 after investment growth, according to HM Revenue & Customs - yet my suspicion is lost ones are likely worth less, so I'm going to take a punt at £1,000 - still, real money! So do watch or read full reclaim your Child Trust Fund details.
Under 18? Ensure your Child Trust Fund pays max interest. Whether you know about your CTF or have just located it, CTFs are now dead accounts - you can't open a new one - so there's little competition and interest rates can be low. Check yours. But you can convert it into its successor product, a top junior ISA, which can pay up to 3.8%. Within the application form for the junior ISA there'll be a section to ask to transfer CTFs (or other junior ISAs) across. Shares-based CTFs can be transferred into a shares junior ISA too.
Had a Child Trust Fund and now 18 - what happens? If you do or did nothing, your cash CTF likely automatically becomes a cash ISA (not a junior one), investment CTFs likely become investment ISAs - unless your firm doesn't offer those. Yet you don't want this sorted by default and you may want to spend some of it, so actively ensure your money is in the right place for you. See our Maturing Child Trust Fund help guide.
