As a rule of thumb, technology solutions fall into six categories, each of which provide layers of data to leverage for the sake of productivity, sustainability and profitability.

“From an integration standpoint, ideally we’d add all technology at one time, but that’s not realistic for most farms and budgets,” says Farm Journal Field Agronomist Missy Bauer. “That’s why having a technology plan for your farm is critical.” The goal of a technology plan is to make sure all “smart” elements can communicate.

The smart farm of the future doesn’t shy away from leaning into change and using technology to improve productivity, efficiency and, ultimately, profitability. Being smart means taking it one technology at a time to help you manage the planning, planting, application and harvest seasons.

The global tech industry recently gathered at the Consumer Electronic Show. From driverless vehicles to a flying car, the show was full of the latest technology and a few surprises. Tyne Morgan, host of U.S. Farm Report, made the trip to Las Vegas to see agriculture take center stage.
