Are you finding it hard to plan for next year because you’re busy finishing up end-of-year tasks, preparing for the holidays and celebrating with family and friends?
Here are three things even busy people can do now for a productive new year:
Prioritize sleep. Lack of sleep leads to loss of cognitive function, an increase in mistakes and difficulty making decisions.
Clean up your office – or even just your desk. Clutter is a distraction; it wastes time, energy and money.
Look at next year’s calendar and carve out regular time for planning at least monthly before your calendar gets filled.

The current issue of the American Bar Association's Law Practice Division's Law Practice magazine is the Leadership issue. My column in this issue is about mentorship. I talk about the benefits, qualities of a good mentor, how to be a good mentee, how to create successful mentoring relationships, and expanding mentorship opportunities.
If you can't access any of the above content, remember that once you become an ABA member, you can become a member of the Law Practice Division (where this content is published) for free. But if you'd like a copy of the article, please feel free to contact me directly.
I had a great time presenting with Terrell Turner, CPA on December 6th on
LinkedIn for Lawyers for the American Bar Association Law Practice Division. We had so many questions and so much to talk about that we didn't even get to all of our content. We're planning to do a follow up in 2024 focusing on LinkedIn Content Strategies. Stay tuned for more details.
Here are some of my upcoming speaking engagements:
ABA TECHSHOWin Chicago February 14-17, 2024. TECHSHOW is one of the premier legal technology conferences, and I'm thrilled to have been asked to speak again. My topics this year are Do's and Don'ts of LinkedIn and Google Business Profiles. The second will be a hands-on workshop.
I'll post more details as I get them, but for now registration is open, and I look forward to seeing you there!
Second Edition with new tips
The Second Edition of How to Do More in Less Time: The Complete Guide to Increasing Your Productivity and Improving Your Bottom Line, which I co-authored with Daniel J. Siegel, is now available from the American Bar Association. When we started writing the new edition, we thought it would be an easy task, but we found that even though the concepts in the book are evergreen, there was a lot of updating that we needed to do to be in line with the way lawyers practice today. And we added material on videoconferencing, working from home and more.
If you pick up a copy, I'd love to hear what you think about it.
Make LinkedIn Work for You
My friend and colleague, Dennis Kennedy and I are proud to announce that our book, Make LinkedIn Work for You, A Practical Handbook for Lawyers and Other Legal Professionals is now available. The book is an adaptation of all of our previous work on LinkedIn, from webinars and presentations to articles and books. This book is different from what we've done before in that we published direct to Kindle first, and the book contains no screenshots.
You can get the book on Amazon.com in both paperback and Kindle versions.
