Hold on to your broomsticks, Halloween is right around the corner |
Halloween is a little more than two weeks away. If you are looking to add to the day's festivities beyond trick-or-treating, check out these family-friendly events. Wear a costume and bring the kids to Historic White Pine Village, an outdoor living history museum near Ludington on Saturday, Oct. 19. The town will host its annual Haunted Village event where families can have fun trick-or-treating while taking in the last day of museum’s season. Mackinac Island is gearing up for its famous Halloween Weekend on Oct. 25-27. The event will have candy for children, costume parties, live music, deals at local shops and more. A Portage Halloween tradition returns this weekend with the Department of Parks and Recreation's annual Monster Mash on Saturday, Oct. 19. Families can enjoy things like a Scooby Doo movie screening, pumpkin carving demos, and a spooky forest hayride. |

3 voting myths busted by Michigan county clerks ahead of Nov. 5 election |
With less than four weeks to go until the Nov. 5 general election, Michigan election officials are ramping up their efforts to educate voters about the electoral process and bolster public confidence in the system. Three Republican clerks held a virtual press call last week to share the steps that have been taken to administer secure elections in Michigan, and to reassure voters that the state’s electoral process is transparent, secure and accurate. Here are three things to know before heading to the polls. Donations: The exact breadth of the DeVos family's political contributions is unknown, but an MLive analysis found they have publicly given $75 million to state and federal campaigns in the past decade. And this cycle as of July, family members have given nearly $12 million. When tallied collectively, this puts them among the top political megadonors in the country. Michigan’s Catholic bishops accused Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of parodying the sacrament of Holy Communion in a recent social media skit where the governor handfed someone Doritos. The governor has since issued an apology, saying the video was “construed as something it was never intended to be.” |

3 ways the state is putting money back into Michigan classrooms |
In education: Michigan lawmakers have pushed a few measures through Lansing recently that put hundreds of millions of dollars back into Michigan classrooms — each in different ways. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed a handful of bills addressing mental health and safety funding, cuts to school retiree costs and addressing dyslexia and boosting students’ reading skills. Here’s a breakdown of those bills. On campus: A Muslim advocacy group has filed a federal complaint against the University of Michigan after audio surfaced of President Santa Ono appearing to say federal lawmakers are pressuring him to deal with anti-Semitism on campus more than Islamophobia. 21+ only: Stores caught selling tobacco and nicotine products to underage youth would face steeper fines and the possibility of being unable to sell those products under new legislation. |

DNR busts woman who snuck into long-closed Belle Isle zoo to take prom pictures |
Trespassing: In the spring, a woman snuck into the long-closed Belle Isle zoo in Detroit with her son and his girlfriend to photos for their prom, according to a law enforcement report. Michigan Department of Natural Resources officers followed up this fall and found the woman responsible for trespassing onto the property. She said she found information online about how to "sneak into" Belle Isle Zoo and other abandoned buildings in the area. She admitted that she knew that entering the zoo was unlawful. Behind bars: The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says it has arrested a second suspect wanted in connection with the murder of a Rochester Hills man who was killed by two men who allegedly posed as DTE workers. Going down: Data shows gun violence in Jackson is on the decline, leading those living in the area most affected by it somewhat relived, but also slightly doubtful of the data’s accuracy. |

Aidan Hutchinson’s return remains unclear after successful surgery |
Recovering: Detroit Lions star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson has undergone successful surgery for broken tibia and fibula bones in his left leg, but a timetable for his return remains unknown according to the team. "It’s hard to lose somebody like him," head coach Dan Campbell said. "But we’ll know a lot more after this, and obviously we wish him the best.” Going fast: Banana Ball fans’ chance to see the Savannah Bananas’ first Michigan game next year at LMCU Ballpark is shrinking fast. Around 82,000 fans indicated interest in next summer’s games at the home of West Michigan Whitecaps baseball, Carson Bowen, ticket experience director for the Savannah Bananas, told MLive. New facility: The West Michigan Sports Commission broke ground Friday on a $13.5 million project that will expand the Meijer Sports Complex in Plainfield Township with new softball and baseball fields, 20 pickleball courts, a new concession building and more. |

Michigan weather this week: Cold start but a really warm rally late-week |
Weather update: This week is going to go from quite chilly to quite warm in a hurry. With the exception of the Thumb, the Grand Traverse area and the Upper Peninsula, it is mostly a mostly dry week. From Wednesday into the weekend we should have mostly sunny skies and eventually a warm breeze by Friday. The afternoon temperatures starting Thursday and going through the weekend will warm into the 60s and eventually 70s. In the Upper Peninsula: One of Michigan’s most majestic sights is coming alive with color this week as Tahquamenon Falls State Park turns yellow, orange and red during the fall color peak. On the water: The Great Lakes are in the midst of a waterspout outbreak, and the whirlwind of activity is expected to last into Wednesday this week, forecasters say. |
