As it works to develop a national plan of action to address preventable medical harm, the new National Steering Committee for Patient Safety has outlined its four areas of focus. A growing number of nurse practitioners—typically, registered nurses who have completed a master's degree in nursing—are adding up to a year of clinical and other training, often in primary care. Solutions Spotlight Patient falls are a fixture in The Joint Commission’s list of top 10 sentinel events; in fact, they were the third highest sentinel event reported to the accreditor in 2016.
