As a Telegraph subscriber, you’ll be kept expertly informed on the battle against Covid-19 as we look to the brighter days ahead. The government has played down concerns that a third wave of the virus could be imported into the UK from Europe, while the AstraZeneca vaccine has been backed by the World Health Organisation’s vaccine safety panel, which stated that it has the “tremendous potential to reduce global deaths”. In another positive sign, France has also restarted their use of the shot for over-55s.

Despite these encouraging developments, GPs and pharmacists have warned that rising numbers of people are cancelling their appointments to receive the jab or simply failing to turn up, as a result of “scares” in Europe. Ambrose Evans-Pritchard provides an in-depth, thought-provoking reflection on Europe’s approach to inoculation as he states that a second European summer is “in doubt” as the “cost of vaccine failure keeps rising”.

This week has seen further twists in the Alex Salmond inquiry. A leaked report has revealed that the committee concluded it is “hard to believe” that Nicola Sturgeon did not know earlier of concerns about her mentor’s alleged behaviour towards women.

This latest revelation follows the disclosure that the committee voted by a five to four majority that Ms Sturgeon gave an "inaccurate" account of a meeting with Mr Salmond at her home, and therefore misled parliament. Tom Harris writes that “It is now inevitable that Sturgeon will go into the election under a dark cloud of suspicion”.

In America, Joe Biden has prompted fresh questions about his health after tripping and stumbling three times while boarding Air Force One. Dominic Green delivers an incisive verdict on the US President’s performance thus far, stating “Biden campaigned as a safe pair of hands. Already, it's clear he's anything but”.
