Pandora's empty box
It's Tuesday, Baltimore. Y'all handling this cold alright?
Below, you'll see a story that captures local tech leaders' predictions for the future of tech, as well as the reported $800 million in environmental, social and governance investments that Deloitte and PitchBook found was disbursed in the broader DC area — which, for those firms' purposes, included Baltimore (even if we know that they're different cities). You'll also see our managing editor Julie Zeglen's announcement of the 12 monthly themes in Technical.ly's 2023 editorial calendar.
All that we've reported on in the past year suggests that technologists' jobs, more so than other jobs, will be able to survive the anticipated recession. That sense underscores many of next year's editorial calendar themes, as well as much of the reporting and commentary that we plan to publish throughout 2023. But as threats of a severe market correction loom, there's plenty of evidence that not all economic sectors are so lucky.
The Baltimore Banner reported today that the Danish jewelry company Pandora is moving its North American HQ from downtown Baltimore (you've probably seen the building from afar — you know, the one that has "PANDORA" at the top) to New York's Theatre District. The relocation, while anticipated, arrives despite powerful and well-funded entities like the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore making concerted efforts to attract businesses to downtown.
We've reported a lot on companies like Fearless, and a little on others like Diligent, that decided to invest in downtown Baltimore's future. So, we know not everybody sees downtown as a lost cause. Moreover, if you've been to a Bromo Art Walk, then you know that there's plenty of downtown Baltimore to love. Some of you might even live there.
But we also know that this is a city of neighborhoods, each with its own assets, issues and possible solutions. So I want to know: Do you think downtown Baltimore needs saving? How would you go about it? Are bodies in old skyscrapers really what we need to make Baltimore boom? Share your thoughts with us at
