Dear Reader,

It was an extremely busy, news-packed weekend, with events we would not wish to see ahead of Christmas. As you will all know, the Brexit talks continued, but looked more and more intractable, and fears grew about a new strain of Coronavirus – leading to an entirely new Tier for much of England. It now looks as if one of the mutations in this new, more infectious, Covid-19 strain can be traced back to South America, and that it may have emerged via a single patient who had struggled to fight off the disease. Bill Gardner has more on that story and its implications. And you can keep up to date with all the latest political and coronavirus news on our live blog.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. There are some positive stories that we would like to share with you, to help keep your spirits up.

I would highly recommend this interview with Lucy Bronze, officially the best female footballer in the world. Tom Garry interviewed the Manchester City and England right-back who told him all about her long, challenging road to the top. It’s a fascinating read.

And finally, I’d like to leave you today with some optimism. We have spoken to 40 well known figures, from Captain Tom Moore to Miranda Hart, to find out why they are optimistic about 2021. Their responses cover a huge gamut of possibilities, from kindness to the environment, sport to improvements in cooking. I hope they lift your spirits too.

Chris
