Fewer office workers voluntarily left their jobs in August than they did in prior months, with resignations in the sector falling 12% to 682,000, according to the Labor Department. Research conducted by Harmony Healthcare IT showed that about three-quarters of Generation Z workers said that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative effect on their mental health. A similar percentage of Gen Z members said they felt disadvantaged in the workforce, compared with members of other generations, and just 15% said they had spoken with their supervisors about mental health issues, but 91% of those who did said they got a supportive response.
Creating a culture that prioritizes inclusion as well as diversity begins with top leaders, who must take the time to train managers to recognize their implicit biases and make positive changes, writes Gena Cox, CEO of Feels Human. "Managers who understand which behaviors they can keep, which they should stop and which new behaviors they should adopt will enhance their overall effectiveness," Cox writes.
A rule change in 2021 allowing college athletes to earn money in different ways has given way to nonprofit collectives, such as the University of Texas' Horns With Heart, which offers scholarships and other financial benefits to players with the expectation they'll support charitable acts. Some critics have questioned the motives of such collectives, but Horns With Heart founder Rob Blair says his organization's goal is to support the university's offensive linemen with $50,000 scholarships while also giving back to local charities.

Another three-day weekend stretches ahead of us. I admit, I can use it. I’ll be watching my nephews play tonight (Go Scorps!) and tomorrow (brothers will play each other in the UCLA versus Utah game). Sunday is church, a visit with the mo’opuna and a leisurely motorcycle ride through some California backroads. Monday is the gym and prepping for the week.
And reading all weekend. (Yes, someone whose job is to read still loves to read in her leisure time.) I’ll be curled up on the couch tomorrow night with my new book, a highlighter and a cup of hot cocoa.
