We’re almost out of that January grace period where it’s all right to reference the new year. If you’re anything like me, you tend to thrive on that burst of new year energy, but let’s be honest: At a certain point, it’s time to just get the show on the road and settle into the groove of 2023. And yet! At CBT World Headquarters, we’re looking ahead to the strong potential of U.S. state-by-state cannabis reform in this promising new year. Among the states that have captured our attention is Pennsylvania, which has played host to a dynamic medical cannabis market since legislators first approved the matter in 2016. Since then, the state government has been a bit wishy-washy on the subject—despite vocal proponents like former Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (that’s U.S. Sen. John Fetterman to you now) making cannabis reform a clear (if somewhat rhetorical) priority. “There is a real chance Pennsylvania legalizes adult-use cannabis in 2023,” several Fox Rothschild attorneys wrote in a recent review of “laws to watch” this year. “Gov.-Elect Shapiro frequently tweeted support for legalizing adult-use cannabis during his campaign. Democrats won enough seats (despite three currently being vacant) in this past November’s midterm elections to control Pennsylvania’s House for the first time in over a decade.” When the balance of power shifts, so too do prospects for legalization. And when the calendar flips from one year to the next, one can’t help but smirk at the ceaseless current of progress in this strange, uncertain industry of ours. -Eric Sandy, Digital Editor |
