Good afternoon! It's Monday, Jan. 16, and today's headlines include five facts about Martin Luther King Jr., a Harvard course that instructs students on how to treat infants that "identify" as LGBT, and details on the shooting outside a London church.
|
Monday marks the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which was declared an official holiday in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan. In honor of the holiday, this list from CP highlights five lesser-known facts about King's life. Among the bunch: Before marrying Coretta Scott King, King had a white girlfriend when he was a student at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Penn. King also once participated in a Billy Graham crusade in New York City where he prayed, "We stand amid the compelling urgency of the Lord of love, as exemplified in the life of Jesus Christ, and yet we live our lives so often in the dungeons of hate. For all of these sins, O God, forgive." Read the full list now.

Harvard Medical School has launched a four-week elective course that instructs students how to provide healthcare services to "infants" who "identify" as LGBT. According to the course description, students will learn to provide "high-quality, culturally responsive care" for "patients [who] identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or asexual." The "Caring for Patients with Diverse Sexual Orientations, Gender Identities, and Sex Development" course is part of Harvard Medical School's Sexual and Gender Minority Health Equity Initiative, which aims to "foster excellence caring for patients with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and sex development." The initiative's stated goal is to provide "high-quality, holistic health care for
sexual and gender minority patients of all ages." Read more.

President Joe Biden spoke at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Sunday where he compared the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to Moses and Joseph in the Bible. His speech was part of a worship service celebrating the life of the civil rights leader at the church where King once served as lead pastor. The president declared that King was a "non-violent warrior for justice," adding that he "followed the word and the way of His Lord and His Savior." Biden also said it’s a "critical juncture" for the United States and the world, stating, "Just as after World War II, the world is changing and its direction will depend on the decisions the country makes." The Life Legal Defense Foundation has announced that the Coalition for an Abortion-Free Future is posting billboards promoting chastity in the exact locations where Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom's election campaign posted pro-abortion billboards. "Save sex for marriage. Plan your future. Not your abortion," one billboard reads. Mark Harrington, the coalition's spokesperson, said that the billboards seek to remind people "of the inconvenient truth that the main
driver of abortion is irresponsible sexual activity," adding, "We need to have a conversation in this country—including in the pro-life movement—about the true cause of most abortions." Newsom launched his pro-abortion billboard campaign last September to promote California as a destination for women seeking abortion in states that have issued total or near-total bans on abortion following the Supreme Court's overturn of Roe v. Wade in June. A billboard in Mississippi sparked outrage for citing Mark 12:31 alongside the phrase, "Need an abortion? California is ready to help." Read more.

The Reidland United Methodist Men Ramp Ministry in Paducah, Ky., has completed its 1,000th handicap-accessible ramp. The ministry has been building ramps for people in need in Western Kentucky since 1995. Joe Burkhead, the head of the ramp-building ministry who has been a volunteer with them since its inception, told CP, "We always hope that recipients and their relatives take away the realization that God has hands and feet at work here on Earth, and that they are the beneficiary of His love and grace, not our carpentry." The Radiance Foundation's Ryan Bomberger condemns the presence of abortion pills in pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS. Noting that the taxpayer-funded FDA derives nearly half of its budget from Big Pharma, Bomberger writes, " Women (yes, the only ones who can get pregnant) … you deserve so much better than the violence of abortion. Making it easier to access never reduces the complicated emotional, mental and spiritual trauma that follows. There is easy access to a network of pregnancy help centers, staffed by those who’ve been exactly where you are." Read more.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect in London's Saturday shooting outside St. Aloysius Roman Catholic church on Phoenix Road. Officials believe the shooting, which injured at least six people—including a 7-year-old girl—may be linked to a Colombian cartel that flooded the U.K. with cocaine. Police on Sunday arrested the unnamed man after a car was stopped in Cricklewood Lane in Barnet, north London, The Guardian
reported. It is suspected that the shooter might have been targeting a particular guest in a revenge plot. Read more.

Evangelist Nick Vujicic recently joined Sadie Robertson Huff on her "Whoa That's Good" podcast to caution that churches are at risk of dying unless they shift their focus. The evangelist, who is known for his testimony of being born without limbs, warned that "unhealthy churches" avoid reaching the lost because they are too focused on tithes and talking about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. "I think the Church will be absolutely dead if they do not do two things, which is: reach the lost [and] actually disciple middle of the road. Not too charismatic and not too conservative, not denying the power of the Holy Spirit [and] not really emphasizing the gifts as much as the basics, which I think we've lost," he asserted. "Until we teach our 16-year-olds in the church to keep
their pants on and actually read their Bible from Monday to Saturday … if something doesn't change, man, it's gonna be a remnant. … I'm praying, not for revival in the way that America's praying for revival. I'm praying for a healthy Church, especially in Gen Z." Watch the full episode now.
