| Metal Clay Tips & Tricks | Here are some of our favorite metal clay tips from metal clay instructors Sarah Bober and Irina Miech: 1. Use report covers for your work surface. Keeping the clay inside the report cover helps keep the clay hydrated, ensures a smooth finish when rolling, and keeps your roller oil‑free. (The roller never touches the clay so you do not have to oil it.) Also, if you have to stop to find a tool or texture, just put the cover over the clay so it doesn't dry out. 2. Take advantage of all the tutorial videos and projects available for free online. Cool Tools has an amazing video library with fantastic instructors on a variety of topics. Fire Mountain Gems has a metal clay section with step‑by‑step instruction sheets. There are tons of resources available. 3. You need fewer tools than you think, and you probably already have many of them, like nail files, x-acto knife, and toothpicks. | Meet Master Class Instructor Adrienne Gaskell | Adrienne Gaskell has been teaching at the Bead&Button Show since 2007. Her popular beaded kumihimo classes always fill up quickly and get great reviews from students. We recently interviewed her about her career, her inspirations, and her upcoming classes and projects. How long have you been creating jewelry? When did it start? I usually answer this question by saying that in college I took my first jewelry metals class with the desire to make fine jewelry. However, I recently reconnected with one of my friends from junior high school who reminded me that I use to make beaded bracelets for her and all of our friends. But the real impetus to get me on the path as a full‑time jewelry artist was when I discovered beadweaving about 20 years ago. Beads really spoke to my color sense and my interest in beaded kumihimo quickly followed. As a jewelry designer/instructor, what legacy do you hope to leave behind? As an instructor I always strive to teach my students the easiest way to do things as I think trial and error is very overrated. To this end I want to continue to share my innovations for beaded kumihimo with as many people as possible. I would also like to give my students a solid foundation of jewelry making and design so that they will have the knowledge needed to go beyond a specific project and create pieces that reflect their own style. How did you come up with the idea of the Master Class project for 2018? Over the last few years I've been playing with a lot of different bead placement patterns for 2‑drop kongoh braids. For most of these patterns I like adding texture as well as color changes, so I use a lot of different sizes and shapes of beads, pearls and gemstones... |
