Between 54 million and 68 million workers in the US receive some sort of income from independent work, according to a McKinsey Global Institute study. However, 28% of those with independent roles have taken them out of necessity and would prefer traditional employment, according to the study.

Women pour into Calif. wine labor force
The number of women working in winemaking in Northern California has increased greatly, including many who pick grapes in the vineyards, which traditionally was mostly done by men. Vineyard manager Pete Richmond said that in the last five years, the percentage of women working for him has gone from 5% to 40%.
