As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, we’re reminded of the essential role free press plays in upholding our democracy. It enables journalists to deliver fact-based information without fear of censorship or persecution.

Press freedom is under threat across the globe. Corporations and governments are increasingly using censorship, intimidation and violence to control narratives and suppress dissent. Despite these dangers, journalists continue to work in the service of truth and the health of democracy worldwide, at times even risking their lives to do so.

An informed and engaged public is critical to a functioning democracy. We must stand together and safeguard our fundamental right to a free and independent press.
