Susan F. Tapert and Sonja Eberson-Shumate ARCR is commemorating the 50th Anniversary of NIAAA with a special series of articles (Festschrift). The fourth article in this series is based on a presentation by Susan Tapert during a 2-day symposium celebrating NIAAAs 50th Anniversary.
Alcohol misuse is a leading cause of disability and death in teens, and alcohols harmful effects may be amplified in the developing adolescent brain. This ARCR review summarizes research examining: (1) predictors of underage drinking; (2) alcohols effects on the adolescent brain; (3) factors that contribute to underage drinking; and (4) recovery from the consequences of heavy drinking in teens. Authors also describe ongoing large-scale, multisite longitudinal studies that are vital in furthering NIAAA-supported research milestones. |
