Rajita Sinha ARCR continues to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of NIAAA with a special series of articles (Festschrift). The sixth article in this series is based on a presentation by Dr. Rajita Sinha during a 2-day symposium celebrating NIAAAs 50th Anniversary. It has long been known that people may drink more alcohol in stressful situations, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. This ARCR review summarizes research from the last 50 years assessing the associations between stress, alcohol craving, and binge drinking, and how stress and trauma affect brain pathways related to alcohol intake and relapse. The author also explores how understanding these relationships can inform research into new treatment approaches for alcohol use disorder that target stress and the related craving.
