Seeds of discord: Why isn’t anyone following directions?

Towards the end of July, we reported on a bizarre scam where thousands of Americans received seeds and other small trinkets in the mail from a Chinese sender. Nobody was sure why the seeds arrived or for what purpose, but investigators eventually found it was part of a campaign for foreign Amazon sellers to artificially boost their rankings. Per their advice, nobody should have planted the seeds — but some people just couldn’t help their curiosity.

Many of the seeds turned out to be highly invasive weeds, as well as some harmless plants. And some recipients took things a step further and actually ate the seeds! Why anyone would think of doing this during a global pandemic is beyond me, but we’re thankful nobody’s gotten sick. Yet. It should go without saying, but please: Don’t eat seeds that a stranger sent in the mail. Some seeds are supposedly bad enough to make you fail a drug test. Is there any truth to this?
