You’re a-peein’, space agency: ESA finds the secret to space concrete

As people turn inward due to COVID-19, the scientists of the world are looking forward as they speculate about future missions to the moon and beyond. One of the biggest issues hindering space travel at the moment is the need to carry equipment from the Earth by rocket. Adding new weight to a rocket’s payload greatly increases the budget and fuel requirements, so any materials that can be improvised in space are highly sought after.

Well, the European Space Agency thinks it's found the perfect ingredient for making concrete for future moon bases: human urine. The chemicals found in urine can apparently break down the bonds in lunar soil, creating a pasty mixture that can act as a form of DIY concrete. Scientists believe this can help astronauts build structures in space without needing to bring extra water. Now, all they’ll need to carry is enough water to drink. Nature will provide the rest. Science!

If it’s too uncomfortable making concrete with other astronauts around, they can always take a trip to the far side.
