Margaret Gardiner was the first South African to take the Miss Universe crown in 1978 when she was just 18 years old.
On Saturday, Ndavi Nokeri will vie to be the fourth South African pageant queen to take the title.
Over the years, a big highlight in the pageant is the national costume each contestant wears to represent their country in some shape or form. So much so that the national costume unveiling has been given its own segment and now takes place in conjunction with the Preliminary Show.
We look at six of the most recent South African national costumes:
2017: Demi-Leigh Tebow
Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, now Tebow, became the second South African pageant queen to win the title of Miss Universe in Las Vegas in 2017.
For her national costume, Tebow looked pretty as a petal in her outfit.
The costume was inspired by South Africa's national flower, the protea, and was created by Malikah Hajee and Lloyd Kandlin from the Costume Department in Cape Town.
