I just love fall in Tennessee! While we tend to notice the leaves, there’s a lot more ripening outside this time of year too - including apples of all sizes, colors, and flavors. Yum! Apples have remained popular not just because they’re delicious, but also because they can be preserved in so many different, delicious ways. From apple pie filling to applesauce to apple butter, there are just so many ways to use them, you’ll never get bored. Here are some favorite ways to preserve apples: 🍎 Canning Apples & Applesauce Sometimes, simple really is the best. It’s safe to can apple slices in a simple sugar syrup (of your desired sweetness) for using on oatmeal, ice cream, or baked goods. But that’s not all! Peel and cook down the apples and you’ve made yummy homemade applesauce too. (Homemade applesauce is nothing like store-bought applesauce, trust me. It is bursting with flavor.) 🍎 Freezing Apples Running short on canning jars? No problem! Many folks I know freeze their apples too. And it couldn’t be easier! You can freeze apples whole, sliced, sweetened, plain, or ready for making pie. If you’re worried about them turning brown, I have tricks for preventing that too. Just keep reading. ;) 🍎 Making Sweet Treats from Apples Finally, don’t forget about everything else you can make with your apples! Some of my personal favorites include apple pie filling (saves so much time, especially during holiday baking), apple butter (smells like fall), and even crabapple jelly (yes, those crabapples in your backyard).
