Establish an effective drug diversion
prevention plan

Drug Diversion Prevention

Theft of controlled substances at hospitals has always been a problem of paramount importance, but even with increased security measures, it still occurs. Here are 6 ways you can prevent or curb efforts to divert drugs at your facility:
  1. Have a zero tolerance policy for theft of any drugs from anywhere, by anybody.
  2. Employ a 24-hour diversion hotline for workers to report suspicious behavior.
  3. Employ a waste retrieval system everywhere injectable opioids are used in patient care.
  4. Know and keep track of areas throughout your organization that are the most vulnerable, from the loading dock to the incinerator and update them when new diversion schemes are detected.
  5. Make sure hospital leaders understand that as healthcare systems get better at creating barriers to theft of controlled substances where they are stored.
  6. Offer treatment once an employee is caught and terminated to help stop the cycle of addiction.

For more detailed steps to take in preventing diversion of medications and controlled substances, check outDrug Diversion Prevention in Healthcare. Readers will learn the why's of each of these steps and come up with a detailed plan to institute a cross-departmental prevention plan.
