The business of college football has changed. |
No longer are coaches getting paid millions, universities building otherworldly new facilities while players who want some petty cash have to have their mothers secretly pick it up inside Chick-fil-A bags at the risk of serious program sanctions. |
The NIL era is here, like it or not (Name, Image and Likeness). Players now can get paid. |
But Oklahoma State took things to a new level this season. The Cowboys rolled out QR codes on the back of their helmets. That way, when, say, Heisman Trophy dark horse candidate and running back Ollie Gordon II scores a touchdown, fans can celebrate by pointing their phones at the broadcast. |
The codes point toward a general team fund earmarked for player compensation. |
The move already led to consternation by old-school LSU coach Brian Kelly, formerly of Notre Dame. |
“This is just my personal feeling, putting a QR code on your helmet just doesn’t feel collegiate to me,” Kelly said. |
Welcome to the new era, coach. According to ESPN, Ohio State spent $20 million paying its players this year. The Buckeyes lost three straight years to rival Michigan and watched the Wolverines win last season’s national championship. |
