The laid-back, sub-tropical isle of Madeira, just off the coast of Africa, will lift your spirits in more ways than one. Not only is it home to its famous namesake tipple, its capital Funchal is a genuine delight, with a bustling harbour, beautiful bay, historic architectural gems and glorious botanic gardens.
Staying at Muthu Raga Madeira Hotel, you’re ideally placed to survey the city. This modern tower-style establishment is perched in a lofty hillside position in the lively Lido district, from where you can enjoy sweeping views down towards the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. Up in the hills behind the city you can wander snaking paths that wend their way past over a thousand miles of irrigation channels (levadas), through a mystical and verdant landscape.
Back at the hotel, rest up by a brand new and enticing outdoor pool, work out in the small gym or liven things up in the games room. Choose between two amenable restaurants (one with spectacular panoramic terrace) or enjoy fine Madeira wines and cocktails in one of three bars. Later, retire to the comfort of your room, which comes with a large furnished sea view balcony. |

| Norwegian sale is on - The Norwegian sale is on, with excellent value flights to North America (plus new routes to Buenos Aires and Singapore.) Boston, New York and San Francisco are particularly good value, at around £250 return. Book by 15 January for travel between 01 February to 31 May (excluding weekends, school and public holidays.)
