Women's Day 2016

On Tuesday, 9 August, South Africa celebrates Women’s Day, a public holiday that was instituted in 1994 to honour the strength and power of the incredible women who protested the apartheid government’s ‘pass’ laws in 1956.

Much has changed since Helen Joseph, Lillian Ngoyi and Albertina Sisulu led a force of 20,000+ to the Union Buildings in Pretoria all those years ago, but the annual occasion is still about taking a stand against the scourge of domestic violence, rape and gender inequality that continues to plague our country.

Take a look at our guide to things to do on the Women’s Day weekend. There’s a host of charity events, jols and festivals on the bill that aim to salute the beauty and accomplishments of women, to support organisations working to protect those who’ve been victims, and to achieve greater equality for all.
