75th anniversary of Anne Frank’s diary

Saturday 25 June 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of Anne Frank’s diary in 1947. Otto Frank, the only member of the Frank family to survive the war, posthumously fulfilled his daughter’s wish to publish a novel about her time in hiding based on her diaries. Later, Otto Frank would write about the publication of The Secret Annex: ‘How proud Anne would have been if she had lived to see this.’

Exhibition: Anne Frank’s diary 75 years

The Anne Frank House launches a temporary exhibition that follows events from the first publication of Anne Frank's diary in the Netherlands, the publications in other countries, and the realisation of the play and the film 'The Diary of a Young Girl'. Visitors can watch a specially created video to get an impression of Anne Frank’s presence on social media.

Initial reactions to ‘The Secret Annex’

Anne Frank’s diary was published in book form as ‘The Secret Annex’ on 25 June 1947. A few days later Otto Frank sent copies to friends of Anne and her sister Margot, to acquaintances and to other people who were named in the diary. Some of them came to Prinsengracht 263 in person to talk with Otto about the book; others sent written reactions.

Poem

At our request, author Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, winner of the prestigious International Booker Prize 2020, wrote a poem to mark the occasion: Swimming freely. Translator Michele Hutchison translated it.

2021 Annual Report

The museum was closed for a large part of 2021, but we could continue many of our projects. There was certainly a lot happening in the digital field: we developed online museum tours and launched the sequel to the Anne Frank video diary. You can read more about our projects and activities in 2021 in this annual report.
