Where NOLA Eats

Welcome back, New Orleans food fans! This week, Ian McNulty brings us eight cozy dishes to try at restaurants that are warm and welcoming for fall. Here's how to fast-track your Parkway's Thanksgiving po-boy. On a road trip to Lafayette, we pack an ice chest with smoked sausage and meats from classic Cajun smokehouses. The Bon Ton Café is coming back, while a bakery Uptown is closing down.  Finally, Margaret Delaney shares a recipe for this delicious pear tarte tatin — with a few challenges.

1. The autumn eight.

It's not exactly sweater weather yet. But our appetites are telling us that now is the time to dig in, no matter the ups and downs of the actual weather. Explore eight of Ian's favorite cozy restaurants for red sauce and brown gravy, thick cuts of meat and deep stews.

2. Thanksgiving tradition.

When the calendar turns to November, the Thanksgiving po-boy is back at Parkway Bakery & Tavern. This po-boy is a traditional holiday psyche-up sandwich, served on Wednesdays in November to benefit cancer research.

3. Wait! There's more.

Ian visits Cajun country and scoops up boudin, andouille and smoky tasso along the way. The Bon Ton Café will reopen under new management after a four-year hiatus. And Mae's Bakeshop Uptown will close its doors after less than a year in business.

4. Pear up.

Our writer Margaret Delaney created a dessert worth the calories and filled with autumnal flair. If you're up to a challenge, try this pear tarte tatin.
