Actor Luke Perry died Monday after suffering from a stroke last week, TMZ reports. The 52-year-old star reportedly passed away Monday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, California. Representatives told the tabloid that Perry had been sedated by doctors to limit the trauma from his stroke, which reportedly occurred last Wednesday at his home in Sherman Oaks, but that the damage was too severe. Perry rose to fame on Beverly Hills, 90210, and most recently played Archie’s father on the CW hit series Riverdale. “The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning,” Perry’s rep told E! News in a statement. “No further details will be released at this time.” The actor is survived by two children and fiancée Wendy Madison Bauer. Riverdale executive producers, along with Warner Bros. Television and The CW, also released a statement following Perry’s passing. “We are deeply saddened to learn today about the passing of Luke Perry," the statement reads. “... Luke was everything you would hope he would be: an incredibly caring, consummate professional with a giant heart, and a true friend to all.”

The House Judiciary Committee on Monday sent more than 80 letters and document requests to nearly all of Trumpworld, including former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks, two of the president’s children, former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, the National Rifle Association, and others. “The House Judiciary Committee is investigating a number of actions that threaten our nation’s longstanding commitment to the rule of law, including allegations of obstruction of justice, public corruption, and other abuses of power,” read the letters, which are nearly identical. “As part of that work, I write to request that you provide the documents set forth. This is a critical time for our nation. President Trump and his administration face wide-ranging allegations of misconduct that strike at the heart of our constitutional order. Congress has a constitutional duty to serve as a check and balance against any such excesses.” The letters are signed by Rep. Jerry Nadler, the New York Democrat who chairs the committee.

U.K. intelligence services say they investigated “frantic comings and goings” at the Russian embassy in London in the days leading up to the Novichok poisoning of Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia. The Skripals were poisoned in their home in Salisbury in March 2018. “The intelligence agencies have been investigating unusual and increased activity at the Russian embassy in Kensington in the days leading up to and after the attack on the Skripals,” an unnamed source told the U.K. Press Association. “As would be expected, the U.K. security services have eyes on known and undeclared foreign intelligence operatives.” MI5, MI6, and GCHQ were all said to be tipped off to the unusual activity. Last September, British authorities said they had enough evidence to charge Russian citizens Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, who claimed to be in the southern English town as tourists when the poisoning took place.

San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer is taking a leave of absence from his baseball team after a video of his altercation with his wife went viral this weekend, San Francisco Baseball Associates’ board said Monday. After noting that Major League Baseball is investigating the incident, per policy, the board wrote “Mr. Baer acknowledges that his behavior was unacceptable, apologized to the organization and is committed to taking steps to making sure that this never happens again. He has also requested, and the board has accepted, his request to take personal time away from the Giants beginning today.” On Friday, TMZ released footage of Baer engaged in a heated argument with his wife, Pam. In the video, Baer can be seen jumping toward her and knocking her out of her chair. She can be heard yelling “Oh God!” in response, and calling out for help as Baer appears to reach for a cellphone in her hand. Witnesses said Pam seemed “pretty terrified,” and that Baer only stopped when two bystanders intervened. The pair both released statements Saturday downplaying the incident, in which Larry apologized and Pam claimed that “Larry and I always have been and still are happily married.”

| Keith Flint, the kinetic, punk-haired frontman of British dance act The Prodigy, was found dead at his home in Essex, England, on Monday. He was 49. The live-wire performer joined the band as a dancer before becoming the face of the group and—after hits including “Firestarter” and “Breathe”—he became a ’90s British dance icon. Their 1997 album The Fat of the Land went to No. 1 in the U.S. album charts. The band was still together, releasing its latest album last November—all of their albums hit No. 1 upon their release in Britain. Liam Howlett, who set up the group in 1990, said Flint had committed suicide. “The news is true, I can’t believe I’m saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m shell shocked, fuckin angry, confused and heart broken.” If you or a loved one are struggling with suicidal thoughts, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). | Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is officially running for two different federal offices under two different party labels. On Monday, Sanders filed for re-election to the Senate in 2024, listing his party as “independent.” Team Sanders said the filing was an automatic renewal of Sanders’ candidacy, a standard move for victorious congressional candidates ahead of anticipated reelection contests. That came a couple weeks after he threw his hat in the ring for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Sanders has marshaled tremendous support for his presidential bid since last month, with supporters packing his campaign rallies and pouring small-dollar financial support into his campaign coffers. But Sanders faces a far more crowded primary field than he did in 2016, when he was bested by Hillary Clinton, and some of his critics continue to object to the Vermont senator’s unwillingness to officially affiliate with the Democratic Party in his capacity as a legislator. —Lachlan Markay View this cheat in a browser to see this embedded tweet. |

Virgin Atlantic has announced that their female cabin crew members are no longer required to wear makeup to work. The British airline’s female flight attendants, known for their red uniform, will also be given pants, rather than having to specially request them. “We want our uniform to truly reflect who we are as individuals while maintaining that famous Virgin Atlantic style,” said Mark Anderson, Virgin Atlantic executive vice president for customers. “We have been listening to the views of our people and as a result have announced some changes to our styling and grooming policy that support this.” Female staff can still wear makeup if they wish, according to the airline. Most full-service airlines require cabin crew to adhere to certain beauty standards. British Airways employees are asked to wear a minimum of lipstick, and Emirates staff are encouraged to undergo a seven-step makeup routine. United cabin crew are asked to apply makeup “conservatively,” and avoid “extreme” colors.

Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper is the latest to join the crowded Democratic field for president in 2020. He launched his campaign Monday morning with a video called “Standing Tall” that tracks his life from being laid off as a geologist to becoming the owner of a brew pub, and then elected mayor of Denver before he was twice elected governor of the state. He paints the president as a “bully” who needs to be defeated. “I’m running for president because we’re facing a crisis that threatens everything we stand for,” Hickenlooper says in the footage, against a backdrop of provocative images of Trump behaving badly. “As a skinny kid with Coke-bottle glasses and a funny last name, I’ve stood up to my fair share of bullies.”

The Vatican announced Monday that Pope Francis has agreed to open the Catholic Church’s secret archives dealing with the papacy of Pope Pius XII. The World War II-era pontiff has long been accused of turning a blind eye to the horrors of the Holocaust and the persecution of Jewish people by German Nazis and Italian Fascists. The Vatican has long held that Pope Pius XII had instead secretly helped the Jews and that his legacy should not be held to scrutiny. The bid for sainthood for the pope, who died in 1958, has been stalled since 2009, when Jewish groups protested his ascension. When announcing the opening of the archives, which will begin March 2020 after they are catalogued for the public, Francis said the church is “not afraid of history.” On the contrary, he said he will open them “with a serene and confident soul, certain that serious and objective historical research will be able to evaluate it in its proper light.”
