SCIENCE & DISCOVERY
Image Source: Science News A proposed initiative in Africa called the Great Green Wall plans to impose an 8,000-kilometer line of trees in an effort to hold back the Sahara from expanding Southward. Simulations that were presented on December 14th during the American Geophysical Union’s meeting revealed that the wall could affect the climate of northern Africa and beyond.
The completed tree line could double the rainfallwithin the Sahel, and decrease the average summer temperatures throughout the area, however the temperatures in the hottest part of the desert would increase.
The increase in vegetation would help “create a local pool of moisture,” says paleoclimatologist Deepak Chandan. This would inevitably lead to more heat and more humidity across the land, create a difference in atmospheric pressure and increase the potential for more intense monsoon winds.
The project was launched in 2007 and is currently about 15% complete.
LIFESTYLE & LEISURE
If you've resolved to lose weight or "get in shape" this year, you're not alone.
There are many reasons you might desire to modify your body - that holiday weight, your dating profile, medical difficulties, your new bathing suit — but diet culture is generally the root cause.
Diet culture refers to the collective set of societal expectations on a diet "telling us that there's one way to be and one way to look and one way to eat and that we are a better person, we're a more worthy person if our bodies are a certain way," says UK-based body image researcher Nadia Craddock.
The good news is that there is a lot we can do, regardless of age, gender, or body shape, to begin breaking free from this actively harmful thinking.
Here's how to learn why and how to start divesting from diet culture.

AN EYE FOR DESIGN
Image Source: The Index Project A phone case with a bold new design is said to make people feel calmer and is especially impactful for those on the autism spectrum.
The case is made by E.cue and has random bumps and contours on the back of the case that are supposed to stimulate touch and reduce anxiety. The new case works similar to a fidget toy.
The use of color is also incorporated, as the case lights up when touched and users can select various colors that make them feel calm.
A HEALTHIER YOU
Have you ever found yourself on the cusp of an incredible new opportunity, only to find yourself feeling like a fraud? Like, who are you to do this thing or take on this role? It stems from not feeling enough, and about 70% of us have experienced this uncomfortable emotion in our lives.
If you experience a win, you’ll say you just got lucky, or that it was for some other reason aside from your own intelligence, capabilities, or merit. You quite literally feel like an “imposter” who could be found out at any moment.
Obviously, this is a pretty unpleasant experience to have.
But what do you do when this happens to you? How do you overcome this?
MYSTERY & INTRIGUE
Image Source: Britannica The first permanent English colonyof the New World was founded in 1587 on the East Coast of North America. During the settlement’s first year, Mayor John White had left for England to request additional resources. When he returned three years later, he found his entire family to be gone…along with everyone else who was living there. The word “CROATOAN” and the letters “CRO” had been carved into the trees that bordered the colony.
It is said that the English crew encountered a storm after they came across the empty settlement, and they turned to go back to England. Some believe that the settlers moved nearby to Croatoan Island, which was inhabited by the Hatteras Indians. The Croatoan Project has researched archaeological evidence that helps back up those claims, finding artifacts that only English settlers would have had and used.
Despite those findings, the mysterious disappearance of the entire colony still lacks concrete evidence that explains what exactly happened to them.
