John D. Rockefeller was the first true American oil tycoon and one of the most famous entrepreneurs in history.
What most people don’t know is that Rockefeller grew up on a humble farm — and his family struggled financially after being abandoned by their father.
To help support his mother and siblings, Rockefeller dropped out of school to work as a bookkeeper for a meager salary of $0.50 per day.
Yet despite those struggles, by 1916 he had become America’s most successful businessman and the world’s first billionaire.
So how did John Rockefeller go from broke farm boy…
To being one of the richest, most powerful men on earth?
Many who knew him say it was, in large part, due to his outstanding leadership ability.
This was no innate skill either…
Rockefeller simply followed a set of principles that he believed in and knew to be effective when it came to managing people.
For example, while his competitors often exploited workers and demanded they work 10-12 hour days…
Rockefeller believed in giving people paid time off, making his workers feel important, and would even visit his laborers in the field to praise them on their work.
He knew that 9 times out of 10…
An employee who felt supported and appreciated would outwork one who didn’t.
One of Rockefeller’s senior executives told a story of a team member who made a mistake that cost the company millions.
But despite the expensive blunder…
When that team member walked into his office…
Rockefeller had a piece of paper in front of him which read, “Points in favor of Mr. Johnson,” followed by a long list of the man’s best qualities.
Including multiple occasions where his good decision making had earned the company many times more than what they’d lost from his recent error.
Had Rockefeller not done this…
The man might’ve become gun shy and started to doubt his own abilities.
And just like that, a previously profitable manager could have turned into a liability.
Smartly, Rockefeller focused on the big picture and praised him for his merits.
While these types of leadership principles were rare a hundred years ago…
