Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
MSNBC's Rachel Maddow

MSNBC tripled CNN in total viewers during prime time on Monday, thanks to an impressive showing from star host Rachel Maddow.

Although Maddow's numbers weren't strong enough to beat out Fox News' Sean Hannity -- who won the 9 a.m. time slot in both total viewers and the key 25-54 age demographic -- she played a huge part in getting MSNBC to an average of 1.82 million prime time viewers.

She also bested Anderson Cooper during their hour. Maddow averaged 2.3 million viewers this Monday, while the CNN anchor got a total of 623,000.

While Maddow's total did not earn her the hour's top spot, she came admirably close to Hannity's total of 2.5 million viewers.

Maddow also beat Cooper out in the key demo, raking in 257,000 viewers aged 25-54 compared to Cooper's 175,000.

MSNBC crushed CNN on Monday.

That win is largely thanks to Maddow -- who regularly dominates her competition, even after her show went weekly in May.

Monday's performance is alsono anomaly for the MSNBC anchor, who regularly leads her network and even scored a rare time slot win over Hannity this month.

MEDIA LOSER:
MSNBC's Joy Reid

Joy Reid was hard-pressed this week to understand why Republicans have been denouncing Nick Fuentes after his dinner with Donald Trump because, according to MSNBC host, the white supremacist neo-Nazi really isn’t fundamentally different from the beliefs of the GOP.

Reid spoke with Democratic strategist Kurt Bardella on Tuesday about the already infamous dinner between Trump, Fuentes, and Kanye West. The aftermath has spiraled to the point that GOP leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) came close to explicitly calling it disqualifying for the party’s 2024 nomination.

But, Reid said, the rationale is hard to track, as she sees a "small degree of difference" between the GOP's views and morals and Fuentes'. She went on to argue that the party mirrors what Fuentes believes, citing the pro-life movement and Trump's baseless election fraud claims.

While some members of the GOP continue to validate Trump and his refusal to accept the 2020 election, many have denounced the dinner. Even Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made a sad effort to distance herself from Fuentes.

Perhaps a bit drastic to deem an entire party almost indistinguishable from a vile white supremacist.
